Tuberculosis Information

Cedar Falls School District
Tuberculosis (TB) Protocol

At the time of enrollment in the Cedar Falls School District, ALL students must be asked if they have traveled outside of the United States in the past 12 months for 30 days or more.

If the student HAS NOT traveled outside of the United States within the past 12 months, no further action is needed regarding TB testing.

If the student HAS traveled outside of the United States in the past 12 months for 30 days or more, TB testing is required.

TB TESTING:
Mantoux TB skin testing is required within 2 weeks of entering school if the student has traveled outside the United States within the past 12 months for 30 days or more.  The parent/guardian is responsible for scheduling the testing appointment with their Health Care Provider or the Black Hawk County Public Health Department.

TB test results will be evaluated within 48 to 72 hours of administration, with written results reported to the Cedar Falls Community School Nurse.  Test results will be kept in the student's health record.

If the test result is NEGATIVE (less than 5mm induration), the student is allowed to remain in school.  A second test will be administered in 90 days.

If the test result is POSITIVE (greater than 5mm induration), the student will be followed for treatment by their Health Care Provider.  The student will be excluded from school until a written release is obtained from the student's Health Care Provider indicating student is not a disease exposure risk to others.

The Health Care Provider is responsible for sharing information with the Black Hawk County Health Department Communicable Disease Department who will assist in management of the student's care.
