An Overview of the Program:
The Fire Safety Igniters program will bring 9th grade students from Holmes Junior High School in the Cedar Falls School District in direct contact with the Fire Safety Trailer Education Program and elementary fire safety education. Students will experience and apply the educational opportunities provided through this program. After seeing this program in class, the students will fill out a mentoring application and apply to assist with the Cedar Falls Fire Rescue Team in their presentation and programming of fire safety education to elementary students. An interview process to choose mentors for this program will be conducted with members of the Cedar Falls Fire Rescue Team and the Family and Consumer Sciences instructors.
Cedar Falls Fire Rescue has a program to prepare elementary students for fire and other related emergencies. The program begins with teaching kindergarten students the stop, drop, and roll curriculum, then moves to the first grade learning applications to stay low in smoke, followed with the second grade students creating a fire escape plan and finishing with third grade students being able to put all these elements together with practical experience in our fire safety trailer. Firefighters go directly to each class room and present information while students perform hands-on activities related to these skills.
The Igniters program will develop the
addition of student mentors to the fire safety program for
elementary education and be part of a community service
project. These students will be required to perform teaching
and training as well as be positive role models for the
younger students. The Igniters program will ignite future
opportunities for students and more thoroughly engage
student learning through practical application and community
involvement.

Fire Safety Trailer Newsletter
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have donated money or time to the realization of a dream for the City of Cedar Falls. A few years ago Fire Rescue came to many of you with the idea of purchasing a fire safety trailer. Through your assistance we have purchased the trailer and have had the opportunity to provide instruction to children of all ages in fire safety. We will try, through this newsletter, to give you a bit of information about where this trailer has been and how it has impacted the community.
Some of the events from the past that may interest you:

The arrival of the Fire Safety Trailer was just in time for Fire Prevention Week, 1999, in fact it arrived on Friday night late. The trailer was cleaned up and traveled to each elementary school the first couple of days that week. Firefighters spent Fire Prevention Week at College Square Mall every night. The theme for that week was "Fire Drills, the Great Escape", a perfect theme for the Fire Safety Trailer. |

Arson Awareness Week 2000, (May), saw the Fire Safety Trailer take on a new challenge for firefighters. Firefighters took the Fire Safety Trailer to all the Cedar Falls Elementary School to teach to kindergarten students about fire safety. The Fire Safety Trailer was also featured as a part of the KUNI news program "Morning Edition" during the week. |

The Fire Safety Trailer was also invited to take part in the State of Iowa Arson Awareness Week Proclamation in Des Moines. The Lieutenant Governor signed the proclamation in front of our trailer after a tour and demonstration of the capabilities. |
Cedar Falls Fire Rescue participated Saturday, September 23rd, 2000 in the "Learn To Live" Fall Camporee of the Sundance District, Winnebago Council Boy Scouts of America. We were just one of about 10 agencies that provided equipment and manpower to spend a day with about 200 boys and adult leaders.
The Fire Safety Trailer has additionally been to many of the communities surrounding Cedar Falls. Firefighters from these communities have come in to learn first-hand about the operation of the trailer. Once they have mastered the operation of the Fire Safety Trailer, they can use the Fire Safety Trailer to provide a realist view of what a fire may look like. In some cases, these events in the smaller communities may draw more people than the actual population of that community. Although the use of the Fire Safety Trailer is free to these communities, they often decide to make a donation to help defray the costs of materials, smoke, and other incidentals.
We would like to again say thank to you for your support of this project. Without your assistance and continued support, this project would not have been possible. Cedar Falls Firefighters are planning to use the Fire Safety Trailer to do some staff instruction at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home this year please stay tuned for more news about adult training. We are constantly looking for new applications for the Fire Safety Trailer, if you should have an idea please contact us.
