The ECHOES program at Holmes Junior High School offers a wide variety of programs and builds many positive adult-child relationships. Many students need positive adult role models and a safe environment after school. The ECHOES program helps make connections with the students and influences students' academic performance by offering additional support. Students are exposed to and encouraged to participate in programs that are designed to help them improve academically or to enrich their passion for a given subject. Some of the programs offered are Homework Assistance, Math Tutoring, Science Club, Family and Consumer Sciences, MathCounts, and Plato web-based program.

As we will begin our Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) here at Holmes during 4th hour, the Holmes Leadership Team has reviewed some guidelines for students and staff. I have attached the guidelines that the team has reviewed and ask each of you to implement them for twenty minutes each Friday. The guidelines have been implemented so that we as a staff are consistent with the implementation process and also so that we are using research base, effective strategies to help students become better readers. Research shows that choice of reading material and follow up with a brief verbal or written summary of what has been read makes SSR an effective reading strategy. These guidelines have been run on card stock and distributed to you so that you could post them in each of your rooms. Thanks.

Holmes Teacher Assignment Page:
A special thanks to all of the Holmes staff for your work in setting up our assignment page! As we move through the year, it will prove to be a benefit for students and staff with regard to make up work.
There is no more thoughtful gift to give a teacher who has touched a life than to recognize the role he or she has played in shaping the way a child sees the world. Do you know of a teacher whose educational magic helps improve student performance? A teacher who ignites the spark of creativity in every student? A teacher whose excellence deserves to be recognized? Beginning August 15th, Disney is accepting nominations for extraordinary, creative teachers to honor through DisneyHand Teacher Awards.
"Disney is searching for amazing, dynamic creative teachers who lead their student to the heights of learning. When we find these outstanding teachers, we're going to honor them with monetary awards totaling over $700,000 and recognition at an awards gala. Please give us a hand in making sure we locate each and every deserving teacher. Students, parents, other teachers &endash;anyone who knows a great teacher &endash; please contact us between August 15 and October 15, 2004. Giving them a hand like this is the most powerful way you can thank a teacher. Call toll free 1-877-282-8322 or log on to www.disneyhand.com"
A reminder our next Professional Development Day will be on Wednesday, October 27th. Our staff will continue to work on Every Child Reads Learning Strategies which will be incorporated and modeled into daily lessons here at Holmes Junior High. STUDENTS WILL HAVE NO CLASSES ON THE 27TH.
Instructors have been asked to implement a morning assistance plan with students who have received a progress report at mid-term.
Mark your calendars for October 21 and 22 at 7:00 p.m. in the cafetorium. ECHOES and Holmes Junior High will be presenting "Gary Grinkles Battle with Wrinkles and Other Troubles in Mudgeville".
Invitational Dress Rehearsal: It's that time of year again. The 7th grade class is cordially invited to be guests at the Holmes Junior High presentation of "Gary Grinkles Battle with Wrinkles and Other Troubles in Mudgeville" on Thursday, October 21st at 1:00 p.m.
Just a reminder that area churches in the Cedar Falls Community have recognized Wednesday nights as "Church Night", a time when young people can work building a faith foundation in their lives. The area churches appreciate the schools taking this into consideration as planning and activities occur. The spirit of cooperation that has existed between the schools and churches has set a great example for the young people we serve.
The Holmes Leadership Team and Captain's Group are proud to announce Holmes Junior High's participation in Red Ribbon Week. Students and staff are invited to take part in the various activities. For the last 17 years, school communities across the US have used Red Ribbon Week as an opportunity to teach students about the dangers of drugs and to encourage healthy life choices. This year the goal of protecting our nation's youth from a life-threatening danger seems more relevant than ever before. We need to teach children about the harmful effects of drugs and encourage them to aim for success and resist peer pressure. To be successful, everyone must work together.
Enrique Camarena's Story: Red Ribbon Week was inspired by the life and work of Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. Camarena yearned to make a difference from a very early age. After earning a college degree in criminal justice and serving as both a US Marine and police officer, Camarena joined the DEA so he could help fight illegal drugs. In 1985, while working undercover in Mexico, Camarena was kidnapped and killed by drug traffickers. The 37 year old special agent was survived by his wife, Geneva, and their three children. Responding to his murder and the horrific effects of drugs on our society, citizens in Camarena's hometown of Calexico, CA began wearing red ribbons. The trend took throughout the country, and in 1988 Congress officially proclaimed the last week of October as Red Ribbon Week. Now every October, American children, parents and educators unite to take a stand for a drug-free land!
Our activities will include:
